Welcome to Episode 5 of this Resonate Leadership Podcast series. In this episode, we share three learnable practices for cultivating psychological safety.
When reflecting on ways of cultivating psychological safety, we came across a quote by Daniel Goleman, who spoke of how ‘managing your mood and the mood of followers is the primary task of leadership.’
We pick up this theme in the context of psychological safety and reflect on ways to manage mood, including an approach by Amy Edmondson which involves ‘Setting the Stage’. We also talk about the use of specific coaching practices as part of our leadership repertoire to create a psychologically safe container within which we can do the work.
All of these practices re-enforce each other, cultivating psychological safety along the way. As always, we explore this territory with a focus on how we can build great team performance and allow team members to thrive. This time, we place an emphasis on all the good stories where psychological safety has been cultivated, including an example from the Irish Rugby game against South Africa a couple of weeks ago.

This has been a wonderful project with my mentor and coaching supervisor, Dr. Geoff Pelham. I could not have done it without you Geoff! It’s a wrap!
